Dear readers,
Today we would like to give you some valuable tips on controlling black foxtail in winter oilseed rape and winter cereals at the end of the growing season.
Effective foxtail control in oilseed rape
With falling temperatures and the associated cooling of the soil, the conditions are ideal for applying Kerb Flo or Milestone to oilseed rape. These herbicides work through the soil, which is why it is ideal to apply them shortly before rain or snowfall. In this way, the active ingredient propyzamide is washed off the leaves and can develop its effect in the soil. The preparations are particularly well tolerated by oilseed rape and do not damage smaller plants.
Thanks to their special composition, Kerb Flo and Milestone are also effective on field foxtail populations that have developed resistance to common cereal grasses. We recommend their use in all oilseed rape fields with arable foxtail populations in order to keep grass pressure low in the crop rotation. Milestone also offers extended weed control, including chamomile, cornflower, corn poppy and chickweed.
Application quantities:
- Kerb FLO or generics: 1.875 l/ha
- Milestone: 1.5 l/ha
Frost protection with Solumop
Kerb Flo or Milestone can also be applied in light frost without any problems. By adding Solumop to the spray mixture, you can prevent the spray nozzles from freezing. The potassium it contains lowers the freezing point of the spray solution down to -4 °C. We recommend adding 5 % to the spray mixture, which corresponds to 5 kg of Solumop per 100 l of water.
Late treatment of black foxtail in cereals
In cereal fields with heavy foxtail infestation, you should check the crops again, especially if coarse cloddy soils were unfavorable for soil herbicides after sowing. If foxtail has already emerged and developed 1-2 leaves, a follow-up treatment with Axial (for barley) or Traxos (for wheat and triticale) is advisable. This is because if the winter is mild, the foxtail will grow heavily in the spring and form a thick layer of wax, which makes subsequent control considerably more difficult.
Axial and Traxos act directly via the leaves, so the plants should be dry when treated so that the spray mixture can adhere. Night frosts have no influence on the effect.
